Medicine Share & Seed Exchange

The final class will be a celebration; a chance to share what you created in the course. We will also share seeds that you collected over the Fall, giving everyone a starter kit for growing your own medicine. Olivia will also give you the tools necessary to continue your herbal education, answering questions such as: How do I find information on dosing and safety? What type of work exists in the field of herbalism? How do I build my own  herbal medicine chest for healing common ailments at home?

Herbal Vinegars & Oxymels

This class is devoted to teaching you the art of making herbal vinegar & oxymels. Vinegar and honey are wonderful bases for making alcohol-free herbal extracts. Join Katelyn, creator of Hey Thanks Herbal Co., as she shares her secrets to making sweet & sour medicine. Participants will go home with there own creation as this class is part instruction and part hands-on herbal play time. Material & handout costs included in course fee.

Katelyn is a plant lover, folk herbalist, teacher, gardener, and the heart & soul behind Hey Thanks! Herbal Company, a small-batch apothecary located in Baltimore, MD. Using primarily home grown, wildcrafted and locally sourced herbs, their goal is to provide products that reconnect people to the medicines of their region and prolong the tradition of grassroots herbalism and local healers.

Tincture Making

Tinctures are preparations made by using alcohol to extract and preserve plant medicine. Join clinical and community herbalist Olivia Fite for this exciting hands-on day in the apothecary where we will taste & talk tinctures. Tincture making can be both an art and a science, as there are actually two different methods used. We will go over both, demystifying the science (and math) of the weights & volume method. Participants will go home with detailed instructions and an herb of their choice to start making your own tinctures.

Water is our greatest most accessible solvent. It is part of & essential to all processes of living and healing. This class will demonstrate various methods of using water to make both internal and external preparations, as well as discuss which herbs are best used for each method. Learn when to best employ cold & hot infusions, decoctions, stocks, steams & soaks. This class will be taught by Olivia Fite.

This class is both in-depth & introductory. We will explore "herbal actions" which are short descriptors that let us know how each plant is to be used as medicine. From Galactagogues to Hepatics - these terms clue us in to the amazingly vast powers of plant medicine. This class will also be experiential, as we will taste various herbs to gain understanding of how an herb's action and its taste are closely linked. This class will be taught by Olivia Fite.

Oils have medicinal qualities in of themselves. They also make wonderful solvents for extracting and preserving plant medicine. Learn how to work with oil as an ingredient and solvent to create your own topical preparations. These skills can be used to create both medicinal salves and chemical-free beauty products. How To Grow Your Own Medicine

Are you interested in growing your own medicine? This class will give you an inside scoop on what to consider when planning to plant. How do we obtain seeds, how do you choose what to plant, what plants like to be together, and what plants will yield a significant harvest for a small space? We will also go over the skills of harvesting, processing & preserving medicinal plants. This class will be lead by Holly Burke. 

Holly's Bio: A few years ago I discovered the power of plants quite by accident after experiencing an illness which couldn't be cured with allopathic medicine. Since then, plants have become my greatest teachers and healers. They are an integral part of our humanity; we have evolved to depend on them for survival, both physically and spiritually. I feel called to share the lessons they have taught me and work with others to build relationships with the wild plants around us.

Plant Walk

Take a walk on the wild side! This first class of the series will be held outside. You will be introduced to the basics of plant identification and the practice of wild foraging. If you are brand new to plant medicine, this is a wonderful opportunity to observe how the plants teach us before we crack open the books. If you are not a novice, you will be sure to learn something new, as plants always have something more to teach us. This class will be lead by Holly Burke.
